#TodayInQueerHistory
November 5 (1605)
Bang!Bang!Bang!
Tonight, across the UK and parts of the commonwealth, fireworks light up the night sky. But why?
Queer monarch James I and VI survives an assassination attempt as Guy Fawkes and other conspirators try to blow up the Houses of Parliament.

I was intrigued to see which two of the Vatican’s ten Raphael tapestries were chosen for today’s unprecedented service in the Sistine Chapel. The tapestries are very rarely shown - was Pope Leo XIV conveying any message in the choice?

3 years ago, when I wrote The Lost Rainforests of Britain, I talked about the importance of expanding fragments of temperate rainforest like Wistman's Wood

Well now the Duchy of Cornwall is actually doing it. (And through natural regeneration, not just planting!)

Today I've been at Brooklands Museum and I had the honour to look through an original 1953 magazine featuring Roberta Cowell; A transgender woman, racecar driver and pilot.

Even back in the 50's the language used in the article, and by her loved ones, is so heartwarming. #LGBTPlusHM25

Ever wondered why walking around museums is weirdly tiring? At normal speed our legs act like pendulums, swinging forward from the hip & saving us a huge amount of energy. In "museum shuffle" our muscles must do ALL the work of constant readjustment. So cake in the cafe is scientifically justified 🥳

You can bet on athletics to have more than its share of transphobia but Ruth Chepng'etich being grilled on doping in Kenya is just pure old-fashioned racism in sports. You can slice that turd any way you like but at the centre of it is the pure hatred of a black woman achieving something new.

I’m copy-editing my book on the first #LGBTQ (gay/ #trans) rights movement, circa 1900-1933. It begins with hope for a new century. It ends with Nazis. And it looks like 2000-2023, with an election to determine if our remaining ten years will bend toward justice or #fascism. INTERMEDIARIES, May 2025
