Isn’t it ironic that Americans are so scared of radical islamists and countries instituting law based upon their faith, but they’ll cheer when the US government does it with Christianity? Cognitive dissonance at its highest level

Toward the end it kinda points out that we need people like the person Platner portrays himself to be, so I don’t think it’s necessarily an endorsement but more of a broad suggestion

I haven’t seen the damning evidence that he knew as far back as you suggest. That Substack article is more broadly pointing at a need for coalition building and that you’re going to have to accept imperfect people if you want people in your tent. It’s just using the Platner stuff as a pretext

This type of response just assures that people who’ve made mistakes, but their world view over time has evolved won’t feel welcome with the leftist coalition. To create some kind of opposition or revolution you need numbers, not isolation.

Obviously, but that’s kind of a straw man argument. It’s not the point of the quote or that Substack post in general. The point is that if you’re not willing to accept potentially imperfect candidates, you’re in trouble.

Bluesky users are probably pretty chronically online and/or hypersensitive to that kind of imagery. I guarantee the vast majority of people wouldn’t associate it with nazis in real life. Also, it’s easy to say what you would’ve done in some hypothetical scenario that makes you sound like a hero

I’m not saying you have to settle for anything. What I’m saying is, the establishment alternative may be all that’s left if your qualifications for a candidate are so rigid. It’s a very isolating way to judge the validity of people’s view of the world. It doesn’t create community.

Beyond that, the point of that quote is that if your requirements for ideal political candidates include people without lewd internet posts and who have had consistent beliefs as far back as you can trace, you’ll be stuck with more 70+ year old institutional democrats who serve party over people
