Gold Butte National Monument has some amazing cryptobiotic soils which help retain water and beneficial microbes. Disruption from walking over them or from extreme drought can cause soil particles to aerosolize, possibly increasing the risk of liver disease and liver cancer. Don’t bust the crust!
