Love this idea! You want our taxes? Then comply with the constitution and quit your corrupting.
Employers across blue states withhold federal taxes from worker paychecks every year and send that money straight to the IRS. State legislatures can order them to stop. Pass a law requiring every employer in the state to redirect federal tax withholdings to a state escrow account instead of D.C. The money then sits in state control. Does the federal government want access? Then they can submit to independent audit proving funds will be allocated according to congressional appropriations, not redirected through executive action. Demonstrate spending complies with constitutional limits and active court orders. Prove compliance with anti-commandeering doctrine and due process protections. Pass the audit, get the money. Fail it, the billions stay in escrow until constitutional compliance can be verified. The escrow mechanism also functions as anti-corruption compliance oversight. States aren’t refusing to remit taxes arbitrarily. They’re establishing accountability for an executive that operates above constitutional limits. When the administration runs pay-for-pardon schemes, accepts private jets from foreign governments in violation of the emoluments clause, and uses federal resources for quid pro quo arrangements, states have authority to demand verification that tax dollars aren’t financing corruption before releasing funds.

In the final stages of filtering my plum liqueur, made with Santa Rosa plums from my garden. The one on the right has been filtered through a metal coffee filter, and the one on the left has additionally gone through a paper coffee filter. It takes forever, but the clarity achieved is worth it.

Ridiculous appointment by Lurie. Not only has she zero relevant experience, but she also couldn't have been bothered to vote in the last three elections.
Alcaraz, who is of Filipina-Chinese heritage, does not speak Chinese. Her voting record in San Francisco is spotty: She did not cast a ballot in last year’s Democratic primary, a loaded ballot featuring myriad state and local issues as well as the presidential contest. She also did not vote in the February 2022 election featuring the school board recall and a State Assembly contest, nor in the November 2019 municipal election featuring races for mayor, DA, school board and five ballot propositions.

Main text: So almost as soon as Mills, the party establishment’s handpicked candidate, entered the race against Platner, he has all of a sudden been hit with a series of damaging stories about dumb things he said more than a decade ago on the internet: offensive statements about black Americans and women; his use of the words “retard” and “gay” as derogatory terms; his support for fighting tyranny with semiautomatic rifles, indistinguishable from any National Rifle Association ad in the past twenty years; and now a tattoo he drunkenly got with his military buddies in Croatia that he didn’t realize at the time was a Nazi symbol. (Platner has now apologized and had the tattoo redone.) One of the other controversies is that he wore an “antifa supersoldier” label on his military gear. Side quote: How does any of this square with what the Democratic establishment has been saying about cancel culture and inviting working-class men back into the tent?

What this case shows is that the Republicans on the Supreme Court are as much at war with “facts,” “science,” and “experts” as any MAGA yokel watching TikTok doctors and doing “their own research.” The difference between these Republicans and those refusing vaccines and taking Ivermectin is not education or enlightenment; it’s just that the Supreme Court justices have really good health insurance and can get a same-day appointment with the best doctor of their choice every time they get the sniffles.

Not surprised who was willing to give up their "principles" for a 6- or 7-figure paycheck. Any of the comedians I had heard of who went were already well established as complete AHs... CK, Chappelle, Ansari, Burr, Carr.

They deserve to be skewered publicly. May it continue.
Perhaps the likes of Chappelle, Ansari and CK felt there was less at stake because, by their own estimation, they have already suffered cancellation. Except that their exile from public life appears to include fresh Netflix specials and Grammy awards. Louis CK should count himself lucky; if he’d been caught with his dick in his hand in Najd, rather than Colorado, he may well have retained neither of those appendages (punitive limb amputation is an actual thing). CK’s stance on murderous dictatorships seems to have changed since this full-throated criticism of Libya’s Muammar Gaddafi. But fair play to him in one sense for getting out of his comfort zone – he has a whole bit about giving up weed and yet here he is visiting a place where getting stoned is common. CK has defended himself thus: “I struggled about going once I heard what everybody was saying.” Truly, a man of integrity.

What are we to make of a man who called for the execution of the American president, and then was executed himself? What are we to make of an NFL that, on one hand, encourages us to “End Racism,” and, on the other, urges us to commemorate an unreconstructed white supremacist? And what of the writers, the thinkers, and the pundits who cannot separate the great crime of Kirk’s death from the malignancy of his public life? Can they truly be so ignorant to the words of a man they have so rushed to memorialize? I don’t know. But the most telling detail in Klein’s column was that, for all his praise, there was not a single word in the piece from Kirk himself.
