The near daily barrage of deadly mass shootings in America feels like low level warfare against normal citizens who just want to live in peace. And because people keep electing Republicans who won’t do anything about it there’s no solution in sight.

Interesting to note that the coal industry in the U.S. employs just a tad over 40,000 people, according to the BLS. The same source tells us that 64,000 people work at wineries.
Energy Secretary Chris Wright on Fox: "We're announcing today expanded programs to help the American coal industry. We're helping it because for years it has been under assault. It was out of fashion with the chardonnay set in San Francisco, Boulder, and NYC ... coal just makes the world go round."

Republicans would rather shut down the government than help millions of Americans afford health care. This article tells some of their stories, and is a good reminder of what’s at stake.
These people have found their health care at the center of a shutdown showdown

'Govern yourselves accordingly': Florida threatens teachers who criticize Charlie Kirk
A Thursday email from Florida Education Commissioner Anastasios Kamoutsas to public school superintendents in the Sunshine State appears to contain a threat to teachers who publicly express negative opinions about deceased far-right activist Charlie Kirk. According to the email — which AlterNet received from a Florida educator and was later shared by Politico — Kamoutsas said teachers who post "despicable comments on social media regarding the horrific assassination of Charlie Kirk" could be subjected to an "investigation." "These few are not a reflection of the great, high-quality teachers who make up a vast majority of Florida's educators," the email read. "Nevertheless, I will be conducting an investigation of every educator who engages in this vile, sanctionable behavior." Kamoutsas said teachers could be held accountable under "Rule 6A-10.081, Florida Administrative Code (F.A.C.) Principles of Professional Conduct for the Education Profession in Florida" and that he may "find probable cause to sanction an educator's certificate." READ MORE: Newly discovered emails from Epstein's personal account 'made references to Trump': report "Although educators have First Amendment rights, these rights do not extend without limit into their professional duties," Kamoutsas' email read. "An educator's personal views that are made public may undermine the trust of the students and families that they serve." The rule Kamoutsas cited suggests that any "investigation" he conducts into teachers could find them "guilty of personal conduct that seriously reduces that person's effectiveness as an employee of the district school board" if they were found to have posted negative opinions about Kirk on social media. "I expect you to share this reminder with all school district employees," the email reads. "Together, we must uphold the highest standards of professionalism and keep Florida's classrooms places of safety and academic achievement for every student." "Govern yourselves accordingly," Kamoutsas added. READ MORE: 'Massively ignorant': Why this MAGA candidate is getting threats from Trump supporters AlterNet reached out to the Florida Department of Education and Commissioner Kamoutsas' office for comment.

Everytown is the parent company of Moms Demand Action. Rolling this program out has damaged our advocacy and hurt the entire GVP community. ET will survive, but Moms is damaged beyond repair. It's a devastating slap in the face to the survivors of gun violence and to the long time volunteers.
the leading organization fighting gun violence now offering training for how to shoot a gun seems like…a pretty noteworthy pivot. (in the video the executive director calls this a NEW program, separate from past “gun safety” efforts.)
🔔 NEW: We’re pleased to join @ferrellzabala.bsky.social in announcing #TrainSMART — Everytown Support Fund’s groundbreaking firearms training program created by veterans who understand the training, safety, and responsibility required to own and operate firearms. 🧵

Florida justices have given Republicans a roadmap for working around anti-gerrymandering reforms. What seemed like durable constitutional safeguards now depend largely on the restraint of the very politicians they were designed to constrain.
Floridians Restricted Gerrymandering. Their Justices Are Retreating on Enforcing That.
Florida’s supreme court blessed the 2022 GOP gerrymander, weakening a key provision of the voter-approved Fair Districts Amendments. Governor DeSantis wants to take advantage.
