At The Women’s Game live show during championship weekend, Jessica Berman said every game she roots for “the two Rs: Ratings and Refs.” And I just gotta say… Refusing to letting Trinity Rodman walk ain’t going to be good for Ratings (tho admittedly might be good for the Ref’s feelings)

This is kinda all I wanted to hear. An acknowledgment from him, and a promise to learn from it. Coaches aren’t going to make the right call every time, and I have faith that next time he’ll do it better.
Adrián González on the Hershfelt substitution:

"With Hal's situation, we were receiving information that she wanted to continue, that she was trying [to do so]... It is circumstances that we need to learn [from]. Obviously now we can say the sub was late."

I still think Hal was the best player on the pitch tonight. I really feel bad for the kid.

This has been a really hard year in DC and, from the first match against Orlando to the final today, the Spirit gave us something joyful and something to believe in.

I’ll always root for this team.

i know i'm close to it and all but but i like that he wanted to give a player he's rode with since day one — and who was having a terrific game — time to stay in a championship game
I’m not gonna shit on Adrian cause that man pulled out a hell of a season with the spirit. But that sub is probably gonna haunt him for a bit

“A lot of the conversations around the salary cap are being overly complicated,” NWSL Players Association Executive Director @meghannburke.bsky.social told MS NOW. “It’s really quite simple. These are minimum numbers and the league can increase it, and they should.”
New piece up!

An important point from inside: The CBA allows the league to raise the cap by as much as it sees fit.

My takeaways from championship weekend, including some insight from a chat USWNT legends Christen Press and Tobin Heath, all in my latest for @ms.now.

One soccer player's contract could change the trajectory of women's sports in the U.S.
The Washington Spirit and Gotham FC face off in Saturday's NWSL final, and Spirit forward Trinity Rodman’s future is the big story of the league’s offseason.

As I wrote in my column over on The Cutback last Monday, Kouassi and Monday are THE double-act in the NWSL this year.

I feel like we overlook the incredible content that comes out of post-game @washingtonspirit.com press conferences. This week’s features a giggly and ecstatic Croix Bethune, an Esme fart scare, and — what seemed to me — an under appreciated “6-7” from Croix answering a Q from a junior reporter.

if people can pay $165m to join the NWSL, they can pay 22-26 players at least $7m-$10m

What I'm really saying here is this:

If the NWSL isn't willing to raise the cap for the most marketable player in the league, one whose desire to stay is genuine & deep, then it becomes precedent to say it's not worth it to raise the cap for anyone else.

It's now or never.

"We don't want to play a 3 hours soccer game. That was insane."

"We're just trying to be the light of the city. I know y'all hear the chants "Free DC" that are going on and the signs that are there."

The entire presser is short and worth sharing, but I asked about how the conversations the fed has with players starting families. The answer is worth a listen. Start at the 10:20 mark. Also, this will always make me sad for the Syds and JMacs, who didn't get this.

This is one of the things that shocked me when I started following women’s soccer. The lack of investment into reporters makes following the support harder to access which is worse for the game! The reporters who do exist are great! We need news orgs to invest in them!!
There are fewer than five people making a living as women's soccer reporters in the US.

The entire industry runs on them, a dozen or so more people like me who have writing jobs that sometimes include woso, and everything else is done by freelancers or for free.
Common knowledge in your field but shocks outsiders?

A whole lot of athletes are very boring to talk to.
