Look at the recent AI regulation proposals spearheaded by companies like OpenAI. There’s no tragedy there, just companies trying to squash potential competitors by introducing red tape that only they are experienced enough to get around.

Funny enough Canada doesn’t have free trade between its provinces, but inter-state trade restrictions are banned by the constitution. Annexation would actually majorly expand free trade!
