First day of classes! I’ll be initiating ~100 students into the wild world of constitutional law, teaching a course in which VLS students co-author & publish pieces with students at the Nashville women’s prison, and co-teaching a 1-credit courtwatching practicum (+ new office door art). #anchordown

Hard to break through the noise these days, but if you want a different take on the democracy theme, my latest piece explores the values that should define the relationship between courts (as democratic institutions) and the people who use them #accesstojustice

The government is arguing that being given a chance to shout “no, don’t send me into a war zone in a country I have no relationship to” at prison guards just before being put on the plane constitutes a “meaningful opportunity to be heard.”
Judge Murphy: I understand, this was brought up at TRO stage. But my difficulty is that there may be debate over whether "meaningful opportunity" is 14 days or 30 days, etc., but are you telling me dept believes these people had meaningful opp when this didn't even happen during business hours?

Not the main point here, but this sentence contains multitudes: “When the Supreme Court eventually weighs in on the order, we will not learn whether it is constitutional. We will learn whether the Supreme Court is prepared to follow the Constitution.”

This semester in Con Law I, I played a song clip at the beginning of each class (starting wk 2) and asked the students to guess the relevance. Bonus points for anyone who wants to try - here’s the playlist for Fall 2024 😉 open.spotify.com/playlist/64D...

I think I may have hit the #workingmom trifecta by having my kids guest judge a legal design exercise (over their school break) in my #accesstojustice class, followed by a virtual class visit by legal design guru Margaret Hagan [+ candy for (almost) Valentine's Day] ❤️
