LOTS OF TIME

The Business of Fashion is still out there doing good work. But I think it's worth examining how the Conde cuts and collapses are setting up a streamlined portfolio that will be attractive to the right buyer.

The question I have is, what won't we know because it won't be reported?

Nevertheless -- Vogue Business was in a position to look at the retail landscape at a time when, again, it's really Going Through It, in every aspect from labor practices to environmental impact to spply chains to monopolies.

But who benefits from those articles not being written?

It's hard to do really rigorous reporting on how LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, Kering, Richemont, Capri Holdings and Estee Lauder are drastically altering the global luxury markets when those conglomerates control dozens of brands that advertise across an entire publication portfolio.

Vogue Business was always going to be hobbled by one reality: the conglomerates that control the business of fashion are bankrolling Conde's other titles via ads.

For example, LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton has been on a real acquisition tear since 2013, with results that have really rippled out.

There was a space in the retailer-business-media ecosystem & so Vogue tried to fill it with Vogue Business in 2019. The value proposition seems obvious: dig into brands and business dealings shaping retail during one of the most transformative periods since the department store hit.

A few years later, Racked launched. Originally part of the Curbed network, it was acquired by Vox Media in 2013, then folded into Vox's "The Goods" vertical in 2018. Racked was known for its combination of cultural reporting & industry explainers, raising consumer awareness of business practices.

A little background:

In 2007, Imran Amed founded THE BUSINESS OF FASHION. The site's a must-read for folks in the rag trade -- part reportage, part networking -- remarkable for its good journalism and its ability to make money through subscriptions. More on them here:
