I see this most regularly in consumption patterns--how fanfic and genre fic are hailed as champions of literacy, but are frequented largely by people who don't want to creatively engage with anything challenging or new.

They want to select from a menu of tropes and consume those continuously.

As video game journalism outlets steadily disappear, we don’t just miss out on coverage of indie games that need exposure to succeed. We also lose important industry watchdogs. Fewer reporters means less scrutiny of labor conditions and industry practices, shifting even more power to AAA publishers.

The cruelest part about the increasing precariousness of my workplace’s future is that I have known since day one how rare, how special, and how incredibly fragile a newsroom like this one is. It’s like watching someone hover above a butterfly, ready to pull its wings off.
