Leonard’s rule is right for his books. What it really means is clarity of thought. Shakespeare sounds like writing, but the thought is crystal clear. Even when it’s not, the SOUND is clear & that does the job. Writing usually ‘sounds like writing’ when it doesn’t know or care what it’s doing.
Everything I've heard/read from Nuzzi's book violates this classic writing "rule" of Elmore Leonard's. (I, for one, don't always agree with this rule, but it is 100 percent true here.)

Kelly isn’t saying anything that’s not said in the Pentagon every day.
Kelly: He runs around on stage talking about lethality and the warrior ethos.. That’s not the message that should be coming from the Secretary of Defense… He runs around on a stage like he’s a 12 year old playing army. It’s embarrassing.

Please don't let the fear of not doing something well stop you from trying it for the first time. Write a messy story. Paint a crappy flower. Whittle the worst wooden bear of all time.

In case you’re wondering why Pete Hegseth is freaking out about a congressional video reminding the military not to participate in illegal orders:
To put a finer point on this whole thing: "Two people with direct knowledge of the operation" — presumably uniformed military leaders — are accusing the U.S. Secretary of Defense of personally ordering specific war crimes. That's a historic accusation.
Textbook war crime/extrajudicial killing

"Two survivors were clinging to the smoldering wreck. The Special Operations commander overseeing the Sept. 2 attack ... ordered a second strike to comply with Hegseth’s instructions."

Another restaurant owner stood up to ICE. She refused to let fear win. Her courage reminds us that ordinary people still hold the power to stop injustice in its tracks. When we speak up, we protect what’s right.

This is brilliant. Another politician would have let Trump’s line stand. Trump let him off the hook but he said it anyway.
Q: “Are you affirming you think Trump is a fascist?”

TRUMP: “That’s ok, you can just say yes.”

ZOHRAN: “Ok. Yes.”

A chapter in history that will be remembered both for the shame of Washington's betrayal, and for the dignity, bravery, defiance and resolve of the Ukrainian people in the face of it all.

Tony Bennett’s encore piece for years - even during his illness - was to drop the mic & sing I Left My Heart in San Francisco to 5000 or so people, clear as a bell
The old cantor at my church was a trained opera singer. Late on the cue for the Gospel Acclamation. Made it halfway to the mic, turned to the congregation, started singing. You'd never know he wasn't on the mic. Gotta train.
