Yeah, so we've tried to walk a middle line between traditional JRPGs, and tactical games like FF: Tactics, Battle Brothers, Banner Saga etc...
So there are two rows; front defends the back, but only ranged can attack from the back. Grid based like you say. Reposition takes a turn... etc.
