My APs never knew my original name. I didn't know it until I saw my OBC in 2023. My mom in her distressed state had given me a middle name of her closest friend, but for my whole life thought it was a different name. Was a little jarring for us both to learn what was on my OBC

I found out what my birth mom thought was on my OBC when I found her through DNA 7 years ago, but we couldn't confirm until the donut hole was closed in my state & I could access my OBC. Turns out the middle name she thought she had given me and we thought is my current adoptive name didn't match.

Open adoption is not legally enforceable & in rare cases the birth parent can sue, not many birth parents would have resources to do so. Open adoption means the birth parent & APs have some info & possible contact, whether that is a letter once a year or a visit. APs often close by child's 5th bday
