Oh well, maybe this is one of those behaviours that skips a generation. Although TBH I'm surprised that millennials and Generation Zers have that many work travel opportunities - wasn't video conferencing supposed to replace this?

My mother once made a point of travelling back from Vienna to London by train so she could look up her sister in Switzerland en route.

My father eked out his first ever visit to the USA to two weeks by looking up all the friends in the Bosnywash region he'd accumulated over the years before knuckling down to a conference at Racine on the shores of Lake Michigan.

For instance, my mother booked accommodation for the weekend before a conference in Paris so she could treat me and my brother to some sightseeing before dropping us off at Charles de Gaulle airport to make our own way home (would that be allowed for two minors today?)
