The second point is that it is easy to criticise those who try to meet populism on its terms. Let's not forget that we had Brexit a few years ago, and the battle was lost. First, in the referendum, and secondly in the implementation.

So the most interesting question is: if immigration is not what creates deep tensions in society, what is the root of the problem? (I don't know, but I'm asking).

Thank you, you make some very good points. Two questions:

There is an issue of immigration, which no one seems capable of framing correctly in Europe/America/etc. Now, one could perhaps deny it altogether, but this strategy then requires a different diagnosis of a malaise that is real.
