You can tell a lot about about an organisation’s politics and careful tiptoeing by the way they use these terms:

- Ukraine / Russia: WAR
- Sudan and Congo: GENOCIDE
- Middle East: ✨CONFLICTS✨

Also note the lack of calling out the countries involved in said “conflicts” 🙄

If there's one thing I've learned about covering cybersecurity over the past decade or so, is that the cybersecurity community (the fixers and breakers) and the cybersecurity industry (profits above all else) are two very, very different things.

Right now there are a lot of new eyes on Signal, and not all of them are familiar with secure messaging and its nuances. Which means there’s misinfo flying around that might drive people away from Signal and private communications. 1/

The «I have nothing to hide» argument against using @signal.org is flawed. I ask back: Would you be fine with making your conversations with your doctor public? Everyone has something to «hide». Understanding the difference between privacy and anonymity is key.

Every day I read something so wild in the news that I think, no way, that can’t be real. Someone has to be in control. Someone with sense ofc. Then I remember: it’s 2025, and a single country has managed to destabilise an entire continent outside of its own, Europe. Yeah, nothing should surprise me.

I’m confident we’ll soon learn more about Paragon spyware operators and victims. Worth keeping in mind that an individual can be (1) based in country x, (2) be critical of authorities in country y, (3) be targeted with spyware by an operator in country z.

You could do a thumbs up, a fingers crossed, a heart with both hands, the hang loose sign, the peace sign, you can do the Vulcan salute, the cuckoo sign, or even the Clinton thumb.
