This isn't just work stopping. This is cell lines dying. In vivo tissue going bad. Fly lines dropping. Research materials going bad.
A lot of that stuff you can't just pick back up. Once it's gone it's gone, or will take years to reconstitute.

Despite how many people have used the terms “first world” and “third world,” even before they were completely out of date, they didn’t in fact mean “rich countries” and “poor countries.”
