Thymosin Alpha 1 has been studied in other chronic viral infections such as HIV and Hepatitis B and C. We’re curious if it might help similarly in Long COVID.

Background:

Thymosin Alpha 1 is a synthetic version of a peptide normally made by the thymus gland. It has a multitude of effects on the immune system:

-Increases the maturation and differentiation of T cells into CD4+/CD8+ T cells.

The authors propose that their microfluidic device could someday be used to measure patients’ response to antiviral treatment.

If the microclots are forming in response to SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, it’s reasonable to expect they'll decrease, as that persistent virus is removed. 🦠

👉The team developed a new microfluidic device designed to measure numbers of microclots with much greater accuracy: 94% compared to 66% for the established method of viewing blood under a microscope.

In addition the Long COVID patients who had the MOST microclots also tested positive for spike protein in the blood.

This suggests that spike protein may be playing a role in why the microclots are forming - they may be a downstream effect of SARS-CoV-2 persistence. 🦠
