Post from X Popular pirate media almost never shows the use of langrage shot — jagged bits of metal, nails, chain, or wire fired from a cannon or blunderbuss (the shotgun’s ugly ancestor with a flared muzzle). And that’s a shame, because it was one of the most practical and terrifying tools in a pirate’s kit. Pirates in the 17th and 18th centuries weren’t fighting for freedom or individuality against the oppressive crown. They were running heists. You don’t rupture the hull of a vessel you plan to commandeer, and you don’t risk sending the cargo you’re trying to sell to the bottom of the sea. What you do is clear the deck. Attack the masts, sails, and crew — not the hull, not the powder kegs. Langrage fired from a cannon or blunderbuss tore through rigging, shredded sails, and shredded bodies, while leaving the vessel itself intact. It was gruesome, effective, and far more common than cannonballs in a straight-up fight. Continued: But in Pirates of the Caribbean for example, they only use langrage once — and only because they ran out of cannonballs. As if it were a desperate last resort, not the go-to weapon it really was. Earlier in that same scene, Jack Sparrow even complains “quit blowing holes in my bloody ship” — which is exactly the point. That wouldn’t have been a comedic line historically. That would have been practical tactical advice. Langrage wasn’t as cinematic as a cannon ball blast through the hull. It was ugly, efficient, and made sense. But it would have been terrifying to face and resulted in a stomach churning spectacle of carnage and suffering. Perhaps that’s why Hollywood doesn’t use it. Anyway. This isn’t about politics or porn. Just a thing I feel peevish about.
