google’s ai overviews aren’t random, apparently

ahrefs' @thinking-slow.bsky.social just looked at 146 million serps and 86 factors and here’s what shook out:
▶️ aio shows up on 21% of keywords
▶️ 99.9% of those are informational
▶️ long-tail gets hit hardest: 46% of 7+ word queries trigger aio

should you trust google's ai overviews to handle your financials?

new data out of the college investor suggests your answer should be a big ol' "heck no!"

the system prompt for gpt-5 explicitly includes a QDF scale — query deserved freshness — that ranks how important recency is to a given question:

how is google stacking up against llm-based search?

well, according to recent month-over-month growth data:

google traffic dropped an average of ~3%

chatgpt rose 13.2%

claude climbed 68.1%

while perplexity grew 3.3%

context matters here, though

reddit just filed a lawsuit against serpapi, oxylabs, awmproxy, and perplexity

they are accusing them of illegally scraping reddit data through google search results, then reselling it to ai companies like openai and meta
November 4, 2025 at 3:02 AM
out of the 1,000 most-cited pages in chatgpt, nearly two-thirds are “dead” citations

"dead" meaning: wikipedia, homepages, app listings, and other pages you can’t influence

“AI traffic converts better, ” at least that’s the narrative... but does it?

back in june of this year, ahrefs found that 0.5% of their traffic drove 12.1% of signups, a 23x higher conversion rate than traditional organic search

impressive, right? but… context matters

honestly cannot remember the last time google serp volatility was in the "normal" range

unprecedented

microsoft just handed publishers something google never truly has: control over what ai can crawl

uh-huh, bing now supports the data-nosnippet HTML attribute, something google’s had for years, but bing’s version goes a step further

with it, you can:

google’s people also ask boxes are being taken over by ai

new data from alsoasked shows ai-generated answers now appear in 38% of english queries, up from 18% just three months ago

google ai mode is going personal

yup, for signed in users, google is testing ai mode prompt suggestions based on your search history

this isn’t unlike how google already personalizes the SERPs for signed-in users

we exist in information bubbles

more than 3,800 top domains are now blocking ai crawlers, and it’s not just openai's bots that are receiving the cold shouler.

cloudflare’s new data shows gptbot, ccbot, and google-extended lead the pack of most-disallowed ai agents.
October 10, 2025 at 7:01 PM
researchers just “hacked” ai visibility with fake dates.

a new study out of waseda university found that adding fake 2025 timestamps to old content made it rank higher in chatgpt, gpt-4, llama-3, and other ai models.

no new info. no content rewrite. just a fresh date.
October 9, 2025 at 10:45 PM
sooo, apparently there was a september google algo update called "perspective"

the cited resources here are all ai slop

search marketers, what are we even doing anymore?

misinfo is off the charts...
