Assistant Professor of Forensic Psychology at Ontario Tech University.

Studying the intersection of social psychology and the law. Primarily focused on jury decision-making.
Extremely concerning. Urging folks to sign the petition in the thread and contact your local MP. Scary times ahead for Science in Canada.
Canadian researchers should be aware the there is a motion before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Science and Research to force Tricouncils to hand over disaggregated peer review data on all applications:
Applicant names, profiles, demographics
Reviewers names, profiles, comments, and scores

If you’re at CPA today, make sure to stop by my PhD student Natalie Rajack’s data blitz in the Battery Room, where she’ll be discussing the influence of police legitimacy on jurors’ perceptions of recanted confessions! @canadianpsychology.bsky.social

Article from 2024 in a criminology journal retracted because “multiple sources cited could not be found using the references provided”.

The retraction notice is opaque, but I imagine it’s fairly likely some of the references had been hallucinated by AI. 😲

FYI: I am hearing that it would be a very good idea to log into research.gov and download copies of things like award letters if you have active NSF grants.

I also recommend grabbing PDFs/screenshots of public abstracts for NSF awards in case that database goes away.

I received a heartbreaking email today: A paper in a special issue I’m editing is being retracted because one of its authors is afraid of losing their job and their legal status in the U.S. if they publish a scientific study on evolution. Yes, on evolution, nature's engine of diversity.

Poilievre pulling a Trump & Musk & making clear he will cut funding to anything he considers “woke” in federal public service & university research - like anything to do with climate science.

As Danielle Smith made clear, Poilievre is “in sync” with Trump. We can never let him win. #TeamCarney
This probably deserves some attention in English Canada.

Today I was told to take out a line about being a mentor to students from diverse backgrounds and historically underrepresented groups from my biosketch for a proposal, because it might damage our chances of getting federal funding.

How has it come to this? I feel absolutely sick.
