Yeah, re: “desperate to be them”, the meat thing in particular: it’s OK to conservatives if you don’t eat meat because you can’t afford or find it. As long as you are *aspiring to make their choice* they’re okay with the state of things. They actively make things worse so they can be on top

NFTs are a great example, because it was the same discourse in miniature! Artists and consumers roundly condemned it while tech hype bros tried to paint it as inevitable/ fundamental. The “middle path” would have been some application outside crypto but we just haven’t seen that. Haters were right!

I would argue the term itself is becoming an in-group signal itself! Certainly to accuse someone of “merely virtue signaling” you would at least need evidence that they live in a context that rewards the signal and also evidence that the speaker is insincere. None of these guys have that evidence
