I think it's important to continuously reiterate that federal science funding grants in the US (and elsewhere) are made because the government, with the input of panels of independent experts, have concluded that the work being done is IN THE INTEREST OF THE NATION.
When the Trump administration froze this Nobel Prize–winning neuroscientist's research funding, he received an email from China offering to relocate his lab to any city and university of his choice, with guaranteed funding for 20 years.

But what happened to the shark? Goddamn I hate humans sometimes.
A Florida fisherman was charged with animal cruelty after a video showed him stabbing a shark multiple times, according to the authorities. The video was shared online with a caption that reads “bud broke my rod.”

This!
this piece from @ebwhamilton.bsky.social is spot on.

cities should be for families, too. access to schools, universities, daycare, medical facilities, jobs, parks, amenities...

we need better family-friendly homes in dense housing. single stair solves this!

High-Density Housing Is for Families, Too — and We Need More of It
Not everyone who wants to live in a dense walkable neighborhood is able to do so. A morass of regulations stands in the way.

Weird how Republicans say they’re worried about Big Tech and government overreach...until it’s Elon Musk.

We tried to subpoena him over privacy concerns and data abuse.

They blocked us.

They’re not doing oversight—they’re doing cover-ups.

This guy and a box of rocks share the same EQ.
How has Cantor Fitzgerald been around so long
KENNEDY: If Vietnam came to you and said, 'You win. We're gonna remove all tariffs and all trade barriers. Would the US please do the same?" Would you accept that deal?

LUTNICK: Absolutely not. That would be the silliest thing we could do

KENNEDY: What's the purpose of reciprocity then?

Yet Egypt, the country of origin of the Boulder terrorist, is not on it, which reminds me of how Saudi Arabia enjoyed a full and rich life after 9/11.
Twelve countries, primarily in Africa and the Middle East, are grappling with the news that President Trump had barred them from traveling to the U.S., reviving a travel ban from his first term. Here are the latest updates.
Trump Signs Travel Ban on 12 Countries: Live Updates and Reaction
The order, which primarily targets countries in Africa and the Middle East, revives an effort from President Trump’s first term that led to chaos and court battles.

It’s hard to put into words just how comprehensively this bill is going to hurt public colleges and universities in Texas—especially UT.
Texas legislators just passed a bill that
gives politically-appointed regents control over faculty curriculum, hiring, & governance. It does what they accuse academics of doing: privileging ideas, biases, & agendas on political grounds, & silencing those that do not follow their ideology.
Political appointees would have more control over Texas universities’ courses and hiring under bill OK’d by House
Senate Bill 37 would give more power to university regents, who are appointed by the governor, to vet and veto new curricula and administrators.

Wow. This is major news. Judges discuss moving the U.S. marshals from the executive to the judicial branch. Not only would they protect judges from trump threats, but it would also make it easier for courts to order marshals to carry out court orders.

Several guests who attended Trump's crypto dinner last night said they attended with the explicit intent of influencing him and U.S. financial regulations.

Trump is selling access to our government to the highest bidder while lining his own pockets.

It's all out in the open.

Since Trump’s mouthpiece Karoline Leavitt just lied that it won’t increase the deficit, here’s Republican Sen. Ron Johnson saying “This will increase the deficit by $4 TRILLION” and “absolutely” cut Medicaid.

They lie as easily as they breathe. Not that anyone is surprised.

this is a letter to the editor from a high school track runner who came in second to a trans girl in a race. her state house rep in maine started talking about it. so she wrote this: www.pressherald.com/2025/05/14/r...

This is part of a Trump Day One EO. He shut down the refugee resettlement program and said that it could only come back once the program had been changed “to admit only those refugees who can fully and appropriately assimilate into the United States.”

For Trump, that means Afrikaners.

Creating a problem and then demanding praise for fixing it.

A pattern.
Excellent NYT graphic.

In the space of about 3 months, tariffs on China:
-- doubled;
-- went up ≈ 2.5X from there;
-- roughly doubled again;
-- went up ≈ 40% from there;
-- and now have dropped ≈ 80% from the peak -- but are still 3X what they were in February.
