dear Chicago Alleys, never change

bonus cardinal and kestrel! #birds
a male northern cardinal sits perched among the branches and twigs of trees that have largely lost their leaves. the cardinal is a classic bright red with a black mask, bright orange bill, and grayish-red wings. it is very fluffed up and orbular. an American Kestrel perches on the very top branch of a tree, fluffed up and round. I think it is a female from the streaky buffy breast. she also has the striking falcon-like black marking below her eye, a petite hooked bill, and dark head and wings with a long tail. the kestrel in full flight from her perch, wings spread and tailed fanned, back tilted towards the camera so you can see the full stripey brown brilliance of her wing and tail plumage. it isn't the sharpest shot, but I'm stoked to have captured it.

a few of my favorite snowy owl shots from yesterday in Chicago #birds 🪶
two snowy owls sit together on a concrete pier with blue-green water behind them and the shoreline in the far blurry distance. the owls are facing and looking to the left with their yellow eyes just barely open the same owls sit in the same position facing to the left, but the one on the left is looking backwards, making it appear it's gazing into the eyes of the owl on the right. the lefthand owl has more and darker black markings than the owl on the right. same owls facing left. the lefthand owl is looking towards the left again, but the righthand owl is crouched down a little and looking towards the camera same owls, both with their eyes shut tightly. the owl on the left looks absolutely content, and the one on the right almost looks like it's smiling

saw a hawkie on my walkie

gorgeous fall vibes, if not temps, at Rosehill today
a bright sunny day with a smattering of white clouds in the blue sky. a paved path in a cemetery forks to the left and right, and some monuments are visible in the middle distance. trees with yellow and orange leaves line the paths. the tree closest on the right has already lost all of its leaves a similar path in the same cemetery lined with and shaded by trees, gorgeous yellow, gold, orange, red leaves contrasting with the dark lines of tree trunks and branches. the ground and path are covered with fallen leaves.

Bowmanville community gardens looking fallish

According to a report challenging these “dangerous ambiguities,” riot control agents have been used to suppress freedom of expression and the right to assembly. Explainer is great. I’d like to add something like this. Open to either tacking it on at the end, or creating a separate section, whichever you prefer: Under a temporary restraining order issued by a federal judge, if immigration agents in the Chicago area determine a crowd poses a threat, they must first issue two warnings before using tear gas and similar chemical sprays. Illinois State Police troopers, who have regularly been assigned to protests around an ICE facility in suburban Broadview, have similar restrictions around tear gas use. Under a departmental directive, tear gas can only be used as crowd control after a dispersal order has been issued and sufficient time is given for it to be heard and repeated, if necessary.
