I love that these old signs showing destination of Diatrict Line London underground trains still work. Even though the modern version is in the background, I still check this one.

The Kingston River Festival and Kingston Carnival last weekend were both superb. Loads of people out for both of them, enjoying all Kingston has to offer. Culture team at Kingston Council, KREC & River users all worked hard to put on these events, so on behalf of the hoards of attending - thank you.

There is a church service this evening, but I'm settling in to read my new book by @davidwoodman45.bsky.social to learn even more about this very important part of our history, both for Kingston and for the whole country.

My highlight was the talk by @holland-tom.bsky.social of @theresthistory.bsky.social about how and why King Athelstan was so important.
And I admit, I nicked the bit about 927 being more important than 1066 and therefore should be better known.
But you know what he's right!

Unveiling of the new tapestries depicting the 7 Anglo-Saxon Kings that were crowned in Kingston at All Saints Church. Ethelred the Unready was living up to his name and wasn't quite finished, but he'll be along soon.

Joined the last bit if Athelstan Way walk. Some had done 130 miles from Malmesbury to Kingston. I did 3.25miles from Hampton Court - still it's the taking part that counts!
And got to meet up my mate, the former Mayor of Malmesbury over breakfast.

On this day 1100 years ago King Athelstan was crowned in Kingston upon Thames. He went on to become the first King of all England in 927.
Fair to say this is way more important than William the Conquerer in 1066.
Annoying that we don't seem to teach this in schools, but today was about celebrating.

From old bed slats to shoe rack.

We got new sofas recently and rather than dump the old ones (which had broken springs, so couldn't give to others) I took it apart for the wood.
Turns out the old arm rests were boxes that with a little modification and some old paint made great new side tables with shelves. Feeling a bit smug! 😁

Wonderful to see John Azah receive Freedom of Kingston Borough at Kingston Council meeting. John is not only a great person, his work at Kingston Racial Equality Council over decades has made our whole borough a better place. A well deserved honour.

My last week has been filled with sanding and varnishing the floorboards downstairs. As it's all one open plan space and we still needed to be able to use it, this meant moving furniture around daily. Occassionally we had to exit front door, walk around to garden, come in back door for the kitchen.
