To properly translate "films about a haunted video game", I guess you need "a video game about a haunted film"

thankfully we have Immortality to cover that

The number of films I have watched with some variation of this premise is "all of them".

absolutely zero combat systems but several games with murder mechanics

only three of them explicitly about cannibalism (the cannibal dating sim, the cannibal cooking sim, and the deduction game where you are a detective who must determine who ate who in a donner party kinda situation)

sometimes what's old hat to us is completely new to the next generation of gamedevs and they need space to hash this out too

but I def side-eye some who should know better and get a bit caught up in the hot take economy

I really think we all need to blog more (myself included (you do a pretty good job of it already though))

oh yeah there's a whole topic here in terms of the motivations and attentions of players matching the genre and expectations they have, but I just wanted to tell a fun story

but also I do believe the second screen / distraction gaming is impacting singleplayer games trying to hit a large appeal

The SE announcement was such a huge red flag, and has me thinking a lot about external QA studios that might try similar cost-cutting (see also: localization). I hate everything about it.

I don't disagree, and I didn't say all senior engineers. There are similarly writers and artists who have fully embraced genAI despite the impact it is having on their discipline. But there is a pretty wide gulf one can generalize about between different disciplines/roles and their reaction to genAI

I think a good number of senior engineers see themselves as more likely the people in control of the reigns of new technology (i.e. deploying it, architecting it) rather than on the receiving end of it.
