you could also host the Jekyll build static output on vercel. I dont see why the same page would have different bandwidth usage on vercel vs gh pages?

Personally I would make it more about UX than idiology. Offline first UX, still with a server involved. This can uock great usecases, be applied on single features or whole apps and is a win for user experience.
