I just learned that the card used to play Suck & Blow in Clueless is an REI membership card.

This fact will now become my entire personality.
This slightly askew photograph of a television captures a scene in the movie Clueless. Brittany Murphy and Breckin Meyer are participating in a game of Suck and Blow. Murphy is central in the frame, having just received (sucked) the card from the player next to her (Meyer). The card is a membership card from REI, an outdoor consumer cooperative retailer founded in 1938.

What a culturally tone-deaf marketing email subject line, Chrome Industries.
This Outlook email preview screenshot shows a subject line that reads "Make Room For Ice." It is an email about a cooler insert for one of Chrome Industries' bags and not, one presumes, a boot-licking message in support of the recent horrifying actions committed by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Sometimes it's fun to pinpoint the reason you know something (a song, a fact, a person...).

Today I used the word "sclera." I realized I know it because of an essay in Penn & Teller's 1989 book Cruel Tricks for Dear Friends, in which Teller has an essay called "The Scleral Shells." Thanks, P&T.
This is a full-page photographic portrait from the book Cruel Tricks for Dear Friends. The subject, magician Teller, is a middle-aged white man wearing a corduroy shirt. He looks slightly startled. He is wearing two scleral shells, which are prosthetics that cover the visible surface of the wearer's eyes. The shells are mostly white, each with a single black symbol hand-painted in the center. The right eye bears a numeral 3, the left eye bears a clubs playing-card symbol. Penn and Teller regularly force the 3 of Clubs in card tricks and these scleral shells were used as the punchline in a trick performed on the Today show.

I searched "Christmas bucket list" to get some activity ideas. (Trynna keep things jolly in a grim year, you know.) One list had mostly small, simple acts ("have a snowball fight," "make a wish list," "send Christmas cards").

I was not prepared for the jump in scale between ideas 48 and 50.

In google's AI Overview for a search query, the searcher is presented with a brief summary of Freddie Powell and his ex, Cat (Catherine) Richards. Google has scraped a promotional photo of Freddie and placed it alongside the blurb about Freddie. Google has scraped a collage of photographs of housecats and placed it alongside the blurb about Cat. The brief blurb about Cat reads "Cat is now dating Jake Singleton-Hill, a co-star who didn't get much air time during the pod dates." It is unclear which housecat is the cat in question who is dating Jake Singleton-Hill.

My company's internal communications platform (Firstup) is configured to disguise concerning language with music notes.

I gotta wonder: Is "old bag" really being used an inflammatory context THAT OFTEN in the year of our lord 2024 such that this is on the screen list?
