In honor of spooky month, share a 4 word horror story that only someone in your profession would understand:

Sure looks that way.

The year is 2047. Gangster zombies have taken Harlem. But Harlem always fights back.

Could it be a fishtail braid instead, to avoid the issue?

Got one (I think)

Quote this with a book you read way too young that explains why you are the way you are.

For me, it’s Nancy Friday’s My Secret Garden.

Show me your forward facing birds!

Four eastern phoebe chicks staring me down

So, I noticed a red-bellied woodpecker going into this Very Round Hole in a dead branch on a Norway Maple in our yard. I’d heard a lot of whistle-y cheeping coming out of that little hole, and today I saw the baby popping its little head out! 😍 Have I mentioned how much I love my new iPhone? 🥰

Last pic before the phoebe chicks fledged this afternoon. They are so alert and big now!
June 6, 2025 at 3:58 AM
Phoebe chicks still in the nest as of this afternoon! My fave is the one in front, resting its beak on the nest’s rim, eyeing me with suspicion. It’s pretty amazing how much bigger they are than just a few days ago.
June 5, 2025 at 1:26 AM
Haven’t fledged yet! Eyes are fully open now (zoom in and look at the beak just above the nest’s rim on the left side of the pic, you can see a dark unblinking eye staring me down!). Middle chick’s butt sticks out over the front rim of the nest, showing its tan rump with dark gray tail feathers.

This bird (a wild turkey, living up to its name) is not technically on this sign, unless you count looking like it’s pushing the sign over like an absolute degenerate as “on”.
June 3, 2025 at 1:54 AM
Last pic anywhere close to the nest, I think these guys will fledge tomorrow or the next day. Eyes are open, chicks barely fit in the nest now, no pinfeathers in sight. Wing and tail feathers on the middle chick are in focus, and you can see how they are dark gray with tan edges. Beaks are pointy.

And today’s evening pic. Changed position and grew a bit, but not too different from this morning.
June 2, 2025 at 2:34 AM
Okay, so here is the morning pic from today. For some reason my phone insisted on overexposing the shot. Pinfeathers are gone, now feathers with some downy fluff. Feathers are gray with lighter tips. Beaks are gray with yellow edges.
June 2, 2025 at 2:31 AM
Good god, the chicks are big now. The nest overfloweth. Beaks are turning darker and are now just yellow at the edges. Dark gray feathers and fluff everywhere. Can’t tell if eyes are open yet bc a) no clear view of eyes and b) chicks are always napping when I take pics, the lazy bums!

Almost forgot to take today’s #dailyphoebes pic! This is low light on the new phone—not as clear as with better light but much better than the old phone!

More feathery and less fuzzy today, eyes still closed, only 3 yellow beaks visible. Nest will be overflowing soon!
