Ang Higginson presenting hate crime victimisation prevalence among young people (14-25yrs) in 🇦🇺 about the worrying impotence of bystanders in public. Bystanders doing nothing makes victims feel worse during hate speech incidents (& 16% of bystanders were perceived by victims to join in the abuse).

Fascinating talk by Jon Corcoran about scaling up Milgrim's 'familiar strangers' concept w/ transit journeys. The 'invisible ties' & 'light touch community' is associated with reduced risk of victimisation. Nice demo of guardianship! Took 8m to run the models 🤯 pandemic has since changed patterns.

During lockdowns, people being exploited themselves were more likely to call for help, especially in essential industries, while public reports of suspicious activity declined. 5/

The types of exploitation being reported changed: Criminal and sexual exploitation reports increased, while labour exploitation reports dropped—possibly because fewer people were in workplaces to witness it. 3/

Trafficking didn’t stop during the pandemic - but who noticed it, and who was in a position to speak out, changed drastically. The pandemic, therefore, reshaped patterns of visibility as well as vulnerability. 2/
