I am on vacation in Cappadocia and in addition to exploring the extraordinary natural wonders of the region I have just had dinner at a restaurant called Barbarian Medieval Tavern and it was delightful. Skewers and tankards and Celtic music and lots and lots of sausage. 10/10 no notes.

I'm in Istanbul at the moment, but my heart is in Boston today. Stay loud and stay safe, friends. #NoKings

Absolutely wonderful field trip to the@Boston Public Library Special Collections with my Simmons Univ. Library Science students. We were treated to 10th- and 12th-c. monastic manuscripts, 13th-c. Bibles, 15th-c. literature and Books of Hours, and everything in between! Magnificent!

Good morning from @amtrak.com! On my way to New Haven to hang out with my favorite manuscript in my favorite library with some of my favorite people! 😎

Not an actual Calvin & Hobbes comic, but pretty funny just the same! And, in case you didn't already know how far gone I actually am, the Voynichese text in the last panel is from folio 15v... (h/t @theefantomas.bsky.social) #Voynich

Ha! I love this! And, in case you didn't already know how far gone I actually am, the Voynichese text in the last panel is from folio 15v! 😎

Wishing a peaceful and introspective Yom Kippur to all who participate, and a very easy fast.

My favorite slide from yesterday's #Voynich lecture at the University of Toronto...particularly à propos since Jimmy Doohan was Canadian!

What an absolute joy to present the computational and codicological #Voynich work Colin Layfield and I have been compiling for nearly a year! Many thanks to the U. Toronto Centre for Medieval Studies for inviting me. For those of you who missed it, I'll post the video link when it's available!

Did I go to King Richard's Faire today and meet The King himself? Why, yes I did and it was all kinds of fun. It's also a very interesting study in how cosplayers are inspired by medieval tropes, but that's a blogpost for another day...

A ten-year-old girl in a harness flies three stories above the massive crowds, declaiming in Italian about the glories of the Madonna del Soccorso, whose shrine was carried in procession earlier in the evening. It's an absolutely delightful spectacle that originated in 16th-c. Sicily, in Sciacca.

This is the absolute best thing about living in Boston's North End. Not just the summer Italian festivals, but this one in particular: The Fisherman's Feast in honor of Madonna del Soccorso. The festival culminated tonight with the annual Flight of the Angel!

So much Voynich content coming your way in the next few years!
August 6, 2025 at 4:33 PM
Well, I've been keeping this mostly-quiet for a while, but I can now officially announce that, in collaboration with several brilliant colleagues, I have signed not one, but TWO publishing contracts for #Voynich books! #MedievalSky
