Do heat waves happen in rivers? How do river heat waves (RHW) compare to air heat waves (AHW)?

www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

Here we show: 1) RHWs occur less frequently & intensively but last twice as long as AHWs; 2) RHW have risen much faster than AHWs.

Congrats to Dr. Kayal Sadayappan!

Do forest recovery + higher soil organic C elevate production of dissolved inorganic C? No, because cooling soils + lower moisture reduce soil respiration.

On the other hand, drier climate does diminish carbonate weathering + reduce DIC export

What mechanisms underlie near-universal export patterns of dissolved carbon from land to rivers?

Reactions at different depths regulate their directionality (+ or -); subsurface flow paths control strength

Dean et al. @nature.com reveals that most CO2 emitted by global rivers derives not from modern plant material, as was thought, but from ancient, buried carbon www.nature.com/articles/s41...

How & to what extent will the age of riverine CO2 + land C storage will change in the future?

doi.org/10.1002/hyp....

Flat, rainy sites (more silty/clayey soils):
flashier streamflow + more sensitive to dynamic storage;

Snowy sites (coarse sandy soils): less flashy streamflow, lower dynamic storage, lower sensitivity to storage, + more deeper flow.

Can we develop a global #deeplearning #model for daily Soil CO2 efflux?

Results show
- #LSTM models can use existing data to generate synthetic data for temperate mesic regions
- challenges of transferring relationships learned from data-rich to data-poor sites

As wildfires rage through the LA area, air pollution is a major concern. It is important to recognize that such disasters also severely impact river water quality through land-river connectivity, particularly following post-fire rainfall.
