Is it not a simpler explanation that social media is easier to do and more immediately rewarding (not to mention lower risk) than other forms of socialisation therefore people gravitate to it?
"Social media addiction" is the result of corporations and boomer parents robbing people of any other meaningful way to socialise from the moment they're born. Any public official advocating restricting social media knows this on either a subconscious or conscious level.
