Trying to figure out why my OG was 0.013 points lower than expected in yesterday's (extract) brew 🤔

I think I didn't stir the top-off water into the wort well enough and got a bad sample. It's tempting to take another sample but I don't want to risk contamination so... I won't.

Five gallons of homebrew stout in. Hoping to be ready by the holidays!

Going kind of slow over here with the homebrew stout due to hemming and hawing over the right way to use the flaked barley in an extract recipe.

After much ado, I winged it and am now just 45 minutes into the (60 minute) boil.

Done steeping and starting the boil. Look at that color! 😍

Grains are steeping which means I have 45 minutes to read a chapter of John Palmer's book, "How to Brew," as is my tradition.

I read a chapter every time I brew
Butttt I don't brew that much so I still haven't finished it.

I'm in the shop again today to make another homebrew.

Today, I'm brewing a stout. Beer has a few more steps and takes longer than a mead or a cider, for example, so I'll be out here for a while.

(Excuse the mess, I used to use this area for 3D printing and there's some stubborn resin left behind)

I love this thing. I've brought the temperature of my shop up by over 10°F with a pretty small amount of wood actually

I had to block my first person on here yesterday.

They kept un-liking then re-liking one of my posts so I received over ten notifications on my phone over the course of a day.

I thought it was a bug with my phone's notifications until I basically caught it happening.

Is this a thing??

Just ordered all the ingredients I need to brew my stout.

Pictured is a past year's batch.

This winter is going to be lit 😂

One of this regime's methods of control is weaponizing supply chains.

One way you can resist and fight back is by opting out and relying on it less.

Learn to grow, learn to produce, learn to pickle, learn to brew, and learn to preserve.

Cook and let 'em cook. Nobody can take alchemy from you.

When people talk about prepping and Armageddon, one thing they usually overlook is the psychology of survival. Which, is why, I guess, I'm so hell bent on making alcohol 🫠🫠🫠

Yeahhhhh... I think I'm going to swap out this airlock for a blowoff tube

Ended up brewing two ciders too.

Pictured here are:

- Two meads that are roughly the same with different yeast strains (Red Star Premier Blanc vs Lavlin EC-1118)

- Two ciders made with store bought unfiltered apple cider, one from honeycrisp apples and other from a blend

Was a fun day! #homebrew

That feeling when everything's going great until you pitch the wrong yeast 🤦

Planning my homebrew mead that I'm starting today.

This will be a dry mead with a squeeze of lemon juice added.

The last time I made this was in 2016 but I remember enjoying it. I hope it turns out well!

Pic is of that last batch in 2016.

Our homebrew apple scrap vinegar is coming along nicely. You can see the bubbles and it's starting to develop a mother. Currently tastes like apple cider with none of the taste or smell of vinegar yet. I think this is about two weeks in?

Speaking of brewing, I picked up some local wildflower honey today. I'm looking forward to making a couple of meads with it.

I'm thinking of making a gallon of a traditional mead (but dry) and a lemon mead (ok, a melomel)

It's amazing how much better I feel with a cleaned up shop. Also how much faster it is to get everything done.

I still have more to do but I'm already spending more time out there and I'm looking forward to moving my brewing equipment out there.

After four years of just running the farm, my tabs are starting to get messy again.

Last week our farmhand drove off the road into some trees. The trees were the only thing holding his car up from the creek. Today the wind blew that tree over. I'm upset 😭
