I'm gutted and furious that the Iranian people will be injured, harmed and killed as a result of this absolutely depraved act of violence. What a complete travesty on every single level.

Inspired by my first #IWHOD2025! Despite ongoing attacks on vulnerable communities, equity research, and science overall, the resilience of HIV/Hep. & cohort researchers reaffirms our commitment to meeting the needs of persons living with HIV.

Along with @jesshardie.bsky.social I wrote for @truthout.org about the detention of Mahmoud Khalil, and how universities are sowing their own demise, and that of the country's by continuing to suppress pro-Palestine campus movements.

Defend the liberty of a stranger as you would defend your own, or that of a loved one, because that is what's actually on the table—whether we are a society that will sit still as our neighbors are snatched in the night, and disappeared into darkness, or a society that will fight for each other.

Columbia University sold out to fascists and brutally cracked down on kids whose only sin was opposing genocide.

The fascists threw the University under the bus anyway.

I feel like there's a lesson in there about complying with fascism.

"Legality" is cold comfort to me, because I remember that many of the greatest horrors in human history were 'legal'.

And proceduralism similarly offers cold comfort, because I am deeply familiar with the 'slow violence' of administrative processes designed to disenfranchise marginalized people.

1. Sabotage public institutions.

2. Claim they don’t work efficiently.

3. Eliminate them.

That’s the playbook.

Why should the public care about the freeze on the NIH? Aside from the need for scientific pursuits to make our society better…
-For every dollar we invest in NIH research, there is a $2.5 return.
-Research dollars help fund universities that employ non-academics. (1/)

I'd take it further: if you look at the ranks of tenured & tenure-track academics at 'top' universities, you'll find disproportionate representation of people from high-wealth households. Especially glaring considering that PhD program stipends are often less than a living wage.
