I was remembering the mailing DVDs era of Netflix today. One technological affordance of that was that it allowed deliberate sequencing of movies via your queue. I used to watch all of the films of a director in order.

Deepest run in 25 years for the Knicks. Comebacks, heartbreaks, and just one gripping, frustrating, mind-blowing game after another. Thanks, NYK!

Borrowing an idea from studies of gerrymandering, here's "wasted goals" the in EPL in 24/25.
Wins: Wasted Goals = Goals Scored - (Opponent Goals + 1)
Draws/Losses: Wasted Goals = Goals Scored

People still cite Esping-Andersen (1990) on the welfare state regimes typology all the time. Is there a more up-to-date reconsideration of that typology?

The New York Knicks have advanced to the Eastern Conference finals. And they did so by knocking out the defending-champion Boston Celtics. What a time.

Are #smartphones and #socialmedia harming a generation?

This is a hotly debated and often polarizing debate. So we surveyed over 120 experts on the topic to see where there was genuine consensus (or not), like experts have previous done for climate change.

To the best of my understanding (going off the chants outside the Vatican), Lionel Messi just became Pope.

Skidmore allows for a grade of A+ but it has the same grade-point value as a mere A. For some reason, that bugs me, but the asymmetry of the missing category of D- does not.

Despite being a chart enthusiast, I am deeply skeptical of all forms of plot-based persuasion when combined with post hoc ergo propter hoc logic. Lots of things are always happening at the same time!

A very healthy intellectual practice is to decide "I don't care about this" and just stop sometimes. That doesn't mean nobody should care. It just means none of us have the capacity to know about or care about everything.

Sitting on a sun-drenched patio on a cloudless spring day in the low 80s is my definition of hell. Give me a snowy walk to a pub with a crackling fire any day.

If you teach Media Sociology, it's really easy to repeatedly come to the conclusion that "Amusing Ourselves to Death" and "Bowling Alone" said it all. It was the TV all along. Everything else was a distraction.

Hypothesis: expressing preferences for human-created as opposed to AI-produced materials and, more generally, hostility towards AI are becoming codified as high cultural capital tastes. A classic Bourdieuian tension among elites.

When people talk about "viewpoint diversity," they imagine every college classroom to be a political debate society. Do we need viewpoint diversity on the molecular structure of salt or the length of a quarter note? These people have not spent much time in normal college classrooms.

It's been surprising to realize that I don't really like horror movies anymore. I have such fond nostalgic memories of the horror room at my local video rental store growing up.
