The time of year when thin ice skin forms on ponds and at the edges of rivers. Aquamarine shadows, the crisp rattle of dead reeds. Just beneath the icy veil small translucent bubbles form - the slowing gulps of a turtle falling to winter slumber or the mammoth breaths of sturgeon.
