The Govan Sarcophagus was discovered by the sexton while digging a grave in the grounds of the old church #OTD in 1855. Dating from around AD 900, it is the only sarcophagus carved from solid stone known from pre-Norman northern Britain. 📸The Govan Stones / Sketchfab #medievalsky

Máel Coluim (II) mac Cinaeda, king of Alba, died at Glamis, Angus, #OTD in 1034. He slew predecessor Cinaed (III) mac Duib at Monzievaird, Perthshire, in 1005, and, with Owain the Bald, king of Strat Clut (Strathclyde), crushed a Northumbrian army at the Battle of Carham in 1018. #medievalsky

How medieval bell ringers rang the church bells. Perhaps this is a Sanctus bell; there must’ve been an interesting pulley system given the geometry of the angle of the rope. (Stoke Dry, Rutland)

✨ Friday inspiration: The achingly beautiful village of Bosham in West Sussex. King Harold saw the same church tower before he set sail in 1064 to meet William of Normandy who would be his conqueror in 1066. Bosham is named in the Bayeux Tapestry alongside a depiction of the church.
