just realized I’ve never posted a snippet here so please perceive the beginning of 🪞wip, the book I’m currently querying!
Death smelled like the makeup aisle in a convenience store. Sickly sweet, vanilla scented and with one too many drops of formaldehyde, Arabella had mastered the art of ignoring the way it clung to every inch of the Luto Family Funeral Home. It was a habit she'd developed as a young child, waiting while her mom made the dead look pretty enough to be seen one last time and as her grandma comforted the grieving as well as she could, which wasn't very well at all. As an adult, she'd always hoped it'd no longer be needed. Now, as she stood in one of the well placed corners in their viewing room, the particularly odd talent was her lifeline. "You didn't use enough blush," her grandma hissed to her, eyes never leaving the small stage where the casket was set up. "I told you to use more blush, there can never be too much."
