I (finally) created an agent’s guide to 🪞wip, the cozy contemporary fantasy I’m currently querying!

it’s an odd little book, but I love my sapphic zombies and the Luto Family Funeral Home too much to not jump on the trend (even if I am late…)
hopping back on here to update my bio (my sapphic, makeup-obsessed zombies got me an agent 🎉) and try to actually stick around this time maybe? 👀

it’s only february and I already need a vacation. genuinely don’t know how people who live in places that don’t have carnaval make it through this first part of the year without a break 😅

“worldbuilding” but the world is my mc’s parents and the building is killing them

an agent’s guide to 🪞wip, my odd little book about grief, how we try to uphold our mother’s beauty standards even when we feel like we’re dying, and the Luto Family Funeral Home

EMILY WILDE x SIX FEET UNDER

🪞lesbian zombies falling in love in a funeral home
🪞makeup used to hide undeath
🪞think women’s fiction but with a speculative ✨twist✨
🪞grounded contemporary fantasy but most of the characters are under the ground

I’m seeing a lot of people starting to query so here’s my unsolicited advice:

write down what you love about your book. little things, big things, it doesn’t matter. write them down and hold them close because the trenches have a funny way of making you forget them

starting a first draft and loving these characters and all the scenes you’re excited to write yet being sad that one day you’ll be tired of them and rereading the same thing over and over is such a unique writer emotional rollercoaster

was reading an article for school and started thinking about how it sounded like something emily wilde would write and that might be the best example of voice in writing I can give people

idk, for me, personally, if it’s an enemies-to-lovers situation and the “betrayal” happened before they get together then it’s not a betrayal because there were… enemies

drafting might actually be happening for the first time in a while but I can’t get too excited or my brain will be spooked into another writer’s block

was having a semi productive drafting day but somewhere along the way I started researching the history of canada’s rock exhibitions 🫠

the freedom of writing something absolutely terrible and it being okay because it’s a ✨first draft✨

shockingly, the tv show everyone said would make me cry did, indeed, make me cry

this is my official petition to have every author who has a pet in their book put a disclaimer in the beginning that says wether or not they make it

born to watch happy endings, forced to watch as the character constantly falls for the wrong guy while the love interest I like slowly loses her 😭

officially moved to StoryGraph this year and while I’ve enjoyed it so far and definitely think it’s better than gr, I wish they had an option to specify age group while browsing books and that we could create and share book lists

reading a book where the character has an elderly dog companion and she’s starting to worry about it more. I (recently lost my own elderly dog) will simply not survive if the dog doesn’t make it through the rest of the series

was so okay with killing my darlings until the darling in question was the set up for one of my favorite premises that I had written my favorite first line for and regularly daydreamed about
January 7, 2025 at 10:36 PM
reading books you don’t think are good is actually really useful as a writer. I’ve learnt just as much reading “bad” books as I have reading ones I thought were masterpieces
January 3, 2025 at 7:47 PM
going on the StoryGraph website and discovering they have the option to join readalongs with random people and there are conversations separated by which part of the book you’ve read to avoid spoilers. this might be their best feature yet

YOU GUYS QUERYTRACKER PATRICK FIXED THE FORMATTING ISSUES IN QUERY MANAGER AND NOW IT KEEPS THE ITALICS, BOLD, UNDERLINES, ETC.. ENDING 2024 WITH A BANG

hardest part about growing up, for me, is letting go of the person I thought I should/would be and allowing a new, happier, healthier version to exist in its place without truly believing that I killed the adult younger me would’ve loved
December 29, 2024 at 4:41 PM
wrote a first line for something new and that’s how I know an idea is becoming an actual wip
December 28, 2024 at 2:00 AM
still missing two months but I made a little canva graph cause I’m nothing if not someone who loves to waste my time on that website

(adding the blank template in case anyone wants to use it to share the upcoming releases they’re excited about as well!)
December 22, 2024 at 10:35 PM
trying to find one book release for each month of 2025 so I can preorder now as my holiday gift to myself and get little presents throughout the year and so far I’m missing:

may
august
september
november
december

so if anyone has any suggestions 👀
