Let's talk about efficiency in poverty reduction policy.

Canadian research has discovered that raising the minimum (real) wage for 5% of workers (those at the actual legislated minimum wage) actually raises incomes for 15% of workers.

The battle of local vs. chain is playing out across North America.

In Toronto, we've seen small businesses displaced by skyrocketing rents - only to be replaced by quick-service food chains & luxury retailers.

@dieworkwear.bsky.social notes (correctly!) that this leads to homogenized culture.

When a commercial space is both big and expensive, the tenants tend to be deep-pocketed corporations. So instead of an independent perfumer, you get Sephora. Instead of an brand selling niche workwear, you get J. Crew. This leads to homogenization in fashion (and culture).
