The prompt for delving into Pahlavi today is my discovery of this transcription and translation of the Wizārišn ī Čatrang ud Nihišn Nēw-ardaxšīr (Explanation of Chess and the Invention of Backgammon) which describes the arrival of chess from India to Persia:

“The orthographic principles followed, in seemingly haphazard permutation, in the writing of Pahlavi, besides the ideographic, include the phonetic (within the limits of the alphabet), the historical, the pseudohistorical, and others so indeterminable as scarcely to merit the name.”

How Republicans commemorated Thanksgiving in 1869--with a multi-racial/multi-ethnic gathering of people at a table with a centerpiece celebrating universal suffrage and self-government, and with an engraving of Castle Garden, the pre-Ellis Island point of disembarkation for immigrants.

This is almost word for word what xenophobes in the 1930s and 1940s said about Miller's Jewish ancestors and relatives. He's so hateful he couldn't possibly recognize that of course.
Stephen Miller is now arguing that assimilation is fundamentally impossible and that certain cultures are not compatible with Western civilization

Far from being an eternal symbol of Pilgrims-and-Indians lies, Thanksgiving was, for a good portion of its history, a symbol of social reform and abolitionism

Using the language of probability doesn’t make sophistry and category error any better.

The title of this incredible film is also a great example of the attributive rather than possessive use of the particle の no.

七人の侍
shichi nin no samurai
seven people ATTR samurai
“seven people who are samurai”
In today's exciting episode of I Am Learning Japanese Or So Help Me, I glanced up from my computer & realised I could read* my Seven Samurai** print.

*OK I did look up 侍 but I assumed it meant samurai, which it does. Such detective work!

**I mean YES it does say Seven Samurai BUT see alt text...

Hi, question for Mrs. Shelley. In Walton’s letters at the beginning of Frankenstein, dated to 17--, he alludes to the “Ancient Mariner”. But Coleridge’s 1798 edition spelled it “Ancyent Marinere”, not revised until 1800. Are we to believe that there is some kind of Arctic time travel going on?

Was there any coverage of the recent record warmth in both the Arctic and Antarctic? Multiple global datasets now confirm these records, and I think it's really quite striking.

Here's some very quick plots showing NOAAGlobalTempv6 data from October too. And see my earlier posts.
