Actually kind of rude of Outlook to send me my own vacation responder. Like yeah I'm at a film festival, but I also have a grant and a book proposal...
An email ending "I'm on vacation checking email between things. Best, Larry." Immediately after is a vacation responder with the sender labeled Note to Self reading "Hello, I am currently out of the office (10/31-11/11) with limited access to email. I will respond as I am able, but for immediate research assistance, please contact the Research Assistance Desk. Thanks!"

Four days ago, I saw this slushee and I thought to myself "I make a red wine/rosemary/apple pie. Surely I could make gin/basil/blueberry?"
Thanks to enabling from @emmapauly.bsky.social, I sure can! I'm calling it Kornbluh Pie in my head.
Recipe (with corrections) in the alt text.
A blueberry pie fresh out of the oven on a wire rack. A hand written recipe on lined notebook paper. 1 cup water (actually 2), 2 TBSP crushed juniper berries, 3/4 cup of sugar (actually 1), 1/2 tsp coriander seeds (actually 1), 1/2 tsp cardamom, 1/2 tsp licorice root (actually 1), basil, blueberries, 2 TBSP butter cut up, 5 TBSP cornstarch, 5 TBSP flour, dash of lemon (add 1 shot of gin). 1. Sugar, Basil, water; boil, reduce to like 2/3 2. Strain into bowl, add butter while whisking 3. Cornstarch, flour, gin flavors, bloobs, lemon, over heat until thick (actually make a tea of a sort with the gin flavors and add that to the basil simple syrup. Then add the blueberries, ideally a little icy, to a pan with the cornstarch and flour and lemon, thicken, add syrup + "tea") 4. Add syrup, mix smooth, chill until cool 30 minutes 5. Preheat oven to 425° with racks set up in the middle with tray for overflow (actually forget the tray) 6. Assemble pie, bake for 15, reduce to 375° and bake for 45 minutes (actually 35 minutes) 7. Let cool before serving (actually wait like 45 minutes and then dig in with a wildly messy but delicious slice)

An overall stellar movie day. Although if anyone has any recs on readings about Kiyoshi Kurosawa I'm def interested. I've seen Pulse and Cloud now, and I feel like I'm missing something because I'm deeply ambivalent about them and people seem to think he's great.
