Brown Jays on yucca flower, Santa Margarita Ranch, Starr County, TX, March 2025.
Maybe one of my favorite photos I've ever taken. This is the only place in the US this species has been seen for the past 15 years. Natural perch, not at feeding station. So lucky and a beautiful, unforgettable moment

The charismatic and captivating White-eyed Vireo! At most of the sites I visited in Texas, these could be heard singing their energetic song from deep in the brush, but this one in particular got curious and allowed me to get this nice shot!

Huge backlog of Texas birding content from earlier this month is gonna be coming your way. First up is the 2nd ABA record Mottled Owl that has been hanging out at Santa Margarita Ranch for a year and a half. This was one of my main targets for the trip and I was able to see it on the first night!

Beautiful morning on South Padre

This is the face of someone who has slept like 4 of the past 50 hours but who just saw a freaking MOTTLED OWL in the ABA

Nerdiest and most wholesome shit ever happened today. Tracking a single flock of rare birds ~10 miles with the magic of technology and a skilled birding community

Wanted to be in the moment so didn't fiddle too much with my camera, but managed to capture an interesting image of totality. We had full cloud cover for at least 15 minutes leading up to totality and the clouds somehow seemed to part exactly at the right moment.

Had a good warmup day in Laredo today to get the birding gears lubricated. Everyone in the crew got at least one lifer! Tomorrow we get the Santa Margarita Ranch experience! Pics from today including my lifer Plain Chachalaca

Going to bed in a South Texas hotel room, 85k birds overhead, south winds about to shift to north winds in the middle of the night. Think I've had dreams about this scenario...

Yes I am still a little emotional 😭

This is the scene Friday evening at San Gregorio Beach where Aaron Maizlish found a Swallow-tailed Gull. Only a handful of Lower 48 records. Absolutely incredible bird

Out here singlehandedly changing algorithms at 6am on a foggy Saturday (it's literally just me. I'm "busier")

When warm water brings reports of Wedge-tailed Shearwater and 6-storm-petrel days off CA and you're not sure if it'll last 4 more weeks til your next scheduled trip

Ok normally I'm posting about birds but today was actually a good bug day in my SF yard. After seeing a hummingbird-sized sphinx moth in the backyard earlier, I came across this very cool-looking (and large) dragonfly chilling out front. Who's got an ID?

The last sighting of SF's Red-Headed Woodpecker was July 16th, meaning it was viewed on 17 consecutive days since I found it on the morning of June 30th. The bird was reported on 294 eBird checklists (easily over 1000 ppl given shared lists and non-eBird-users)

I guess it's Raptor Day so here's one of my favorite views I've had of a Ferruginous Hawk
