Huh. For once, they nailed it.

Me, a few days ago: "I'll just do a light modlist for a 'vanilla plus' experience, no need to overhaul the game MASSIVELY..."

The result:

The "Diverse Character Creation" mod isn't as ambition as Character Creation Overhaul, but it also lets you choose which Novice-level spells from your chosen Magic schools to start with. Just don't ever pick Sparks if you plan to start at Helgen; the vanilla tutorial gives you that for free.

Ya know, the Abandoned Prison from the Live Another Life mod is an excellent buffer zone to wait out all of the mod-load startup messages.

The name "Nurome" is also an existing Altmer name. It belongs to a High Elf NPC is Elder Scrolls Online, who can be found in Valenwood and is, most inauspiciously, a fisherwoman. There is absolutely nothing remarkable about her at all.

Fun fact: my character's name, "Nurome Stormbinder," is on I chose partly because the "Stormbinder" name evokes the "Stormcrown," a.k.a Talos/Tiber Septim, the other most-famous Dragonborn. But Stormbinder is also an existing Altmer name, from Elder Scrolls 1, where... a Dunmer had it, weirdly.

I ended up installing the RaceMenu mod even though I don't intend to use any of the graphical overhaul things that make its seven billion sliders do things, for one reason: it gives you complete color control over everything, which I guess is a function Skyrim already had, but is just inaccessible.

Nurome Stormbinder, a High Elf mage. A remixed take on a previous character I made. The only real defining character trait this one has from the start is that she's a survivor of a Thalmor refugee purge mentioned in the lore and, thus, absolutely detests them to a murderous degree.

...There is just a straight-up Cure Disease spell. Nice.

Uhhhhhhhhh.

I gotta say, when you approach the main quest with just a nonexistent sense of urgency and tackle dungeons and sidequests and such along the roads to each main quest objective, Oblivion is quite a pleasant experience.

Apparently you can hire one of the NPCs in Skingrad to work as a servant in Rosethrorn Hall once you have the Servant's Quarters upgrade. She considers this quite an upgrade, as if you ask her about herself afterward, she has a backstory that made me glad I gave her a change of employment.

Housing complete~

The tens-of-thousands-of-septims plus massive upgrade fees make the housing in Oblivion seem so intimidating early on, but then you get to the point where enemies drop ebony and glass equipment all the time and it's like money grows on trees in Cyrodiil.

....I found an unironic piece of Female Fantasy Armor™.
December 2, 2025 at 7:05 AM
...Is there even any point in using these effects on a "target," though? I mean, I suppose you can use it to keep... those useless... NPCs... alive... ish. But, it only even has 20 uses.

Wait, can NPCs even get diseases?!
December 2, 2025 at 7:04 AM
No I did not slaughter a minotaur lord and steal his throne, why do you ask?
December 2, 2025 at 7:01 AM
Man, I skipped "Sideways Cave" because it looked like a throwaway lootcave, but boy was I wrong. This is pretty interesting...
December 2, 2025 at 6:49 AM
Oooh, a Minotaur LORD, were you? Well, your face is just as doofy as the commonfolk.
December 2, 2025 at 6:47 AM
Oooh, new spell. "Ghostwalk?"

*checks wiki*

Oh, it's an Expert-level illusion spell of invisibility. I'm a ways away from being able to cast it, but... this'll come in handy eventually!
December 2, 2025 at 6:43 AM
GASP. It's an Ayleid ruin! Hidden in a cave! DISCOVERY AND ADVENTURE~!
December 2, 2025 at 6:41 AM
...Why are there so many skeletons here.
December 2, 2025 at 6:24 AM
...This random-ass cave near the Imperial City has a secret door inside it. The rock wall lifted up...
December 2, 2025 at 6:22 AM
I'm getting close to max stats. Pretty soon I'll just be dumping a single point of Luck into my character per level.
December 2, 2025 at 6:06 AM
I.... hrm. The upgrading expenses are pretty hefty, huh.
November 30, 2025 at 8:31 AM
Amusingly, the player home in Skingrad is already occupied when you get there—by a guy called Vandorallen Trebatius, who's behind on his rent. I just got a guy kicked out of his house! Welp.
