Surprised to find a couple of (very thorough) summaries of two of the GRIDSHOCK 20XX zines on Reviews from R'lyeh recently.

It sounds pretty nuts when you boil it all down the way these reviews to, and I guess it kinda is!

I wrapped up a year-long Dragonbane campaign last night. That's the longest stretch of uninterrupted time I've spent running any TTRPG, by far.

I had a few problems with the adventure, but I definitely got my money's worth out of Path of Glory. Thanks, Free League!

It's been fun to see YZE's core audience announce that they're not big fans of superheroes, but Free League's Invincible RPG looks like it was their excuse to make a TSR Marvel Superheroes (FASERIP)-style game using the Year Zero Engine, and I'm absolutely on board with that. Target audience: me.

When I run published adventures, I have this tendency to want to just get to the next section. Usually not a big deal, but if I've been running that published adventure for a year, the lack of roleplaying opportunities starts to become noticeable. Something I need to work on as a GM.

Last year, I converted three character options from Operation Unfathomable to Dragonbane. Now that I have much more experience with running Dragonbane, I think two of them are rather underpowered, but I still think I did a decent job with them:

When you upload a battlemap to Forge and THEN upload it to Foundry successfully without fucking up even one time along the way

Is it just the people I game with, or does nobody give their fantasy TTRPG characters swords these days? I hardly ever see anyone make a sword-wielding warrior. Shit's played out! (The adventure I'm running is full of masterwork and magical swords, which none of the PCs are any good at using.)

I just realized I've been running the Path of Glory adventure for Dragonbane since September 2024.

And I still suck at using Foundry VTT! Been fun regardless. Should blog about what worked and what could have been streamlined or done better (both on my end and on Free League's) when it's over.

I certainly put more stock in this review than Google's AI summary of GRIDSHOCK 20XX, which sure sounds nice, but I think is based on the one or two other reviews that exist. Not exactly a huge sample size.

I've tried running fantasy RPG campaigns set in the immediate aftermath of your typical "good vs. evil" war (ended in a stalemate, of course) at least twice but haven't quite nailed it yet. Maybe the third time will be the charm.

I want to make a revised version of GRIDSHOCK. I have a pretty good idea of which parts of these zines didn't work, and can see multiple ways to fix them. The problem is that they're mutually exclusive. I can't decide what to keep and what to cut, and that means I can't start working. 🫠

I played Mothership for a year plus and had fun. Maybe because the Warden changed or ignored a ton of the rules. It frustrates me; the game both is and isn't my style. I even wrote a pamphlet adventure for it, but if I publish it I might do the unthinkable and add sneaking rules.

Also, ALIEN better

The retreat from (or attack on) setting detail in DIY TTRPGs has been demoralizing for me. I haven't been serious about getting back to GRIDSHOCK because I feel like I need to decide what it's about *as a game*, and until I do that, I'm just adding "lore" that most players won't give a crap about.
