Synchronous #fireflies are mostly seen nowadays around TN, NC, SC.

But the first scientific report* of "Fireflies flashing in unison" dates back to 1916 and describes an observation made 50 years prior (!) near Gorham, Maine.

More recent studies also reported synchronous species in TX and AZ.

Yes, there are fireflies in Arizona! 🏜️

If you're around this summer and want to help local researchers with surveying projects, see below ⬇️

I will be there too!
To my Arizona friends, if you are interested in helping survey fireflies this summer, let me know! There will be opportunities in central and Southern Arizona 🪲

Fireflies in Canada 🇨🇦

#fireflies don't know borders! They generously share their tiny lights across the Pan-American continent, including into the northern confines of #Canada.

How far north they spread remains a mystery.

Many animals communicate through vocalizations.

For #fireflies communication is primarily visual. ✨
Flickers are used for species recognition, to signal danger... or during courtship, when males and females establish a dialog of blinks!

Scientists are now using AI to understand animals. Exciting!

Speaking of cold, why do we say fireflies produce "cold light"?

#fireflies flashes originate from chemical reactions which release energy in the form of photons. All light no heat!

In contrast, ⭐️ and 💡 are heat machines where only a few photons manage to escape.

I rarely write, but this poem I wrote at a retreat a few years ago seemed fitting today:

Despair not flickering lights
Shine with me fireflies
Together we make night bright

Dinosaurs, too, could enjoy a good firefly show in their Jurassic plains! ✨🦕

Caught in a piece of amber, this very old #firefly carries light organs (lanterns), indicating that #lightningbugs already flickered in the night 100 million years ago.

What's the difference between #fireflies and lightning bugs?

None!
It's just two different terms for the same bioluminescent beetles.

"Fireflies" is generally more widespread, but #LightningBugs is common in the southeastern states.

Which one do you use?

Long exposure photos reveal the depths of the night.
Sprinkle some #firefly flashes and the nature comes alive!

Streaks, dots, blinking curves... ✨ in the grass, up the trees, across the sky... 🌌 each species has a distinct flash pattern for communication.

Which fireflies make these streaks? ⬇️
