Random movie reckons. Mostly genre pictures, Gialli, French and Italian crime movies, horror from '30s-'60s

Known in the business as the Whispering Giant, but my eyes are quite hard
Or failing that, have a predecessor so manifestly dire, so abjectly unpopular, that you could credibly blame them even for the stuff that wasn't their fault

Unless you piss that opportunity away

He's done a couple of audio adaptations of Poirot, which are fun & which make more sense now that you say that

I'm sceptical but I think yeah it has to effectively be a new show with a re-imagined character. Like in the new version Charlie Cale is, on a day-to-day basis, just a real dick about being a human lie detector, & only uses his power for good when he's dragged kicking & screaming into a mystery

My favourite thing about it, apart from the performances & music, is that when a surrogate character for a famous person is introduced, the movie doesn't metaphorically dig you in the ribs with its elbow & say 'D'ya get it? It's supposed to be That Guy! D'ya get it? D'ya get it?'

Brilliantly done

And that's how my uncle found himself standing in front of Ireland's then Taoiseach, & leading corruption aficionado, Charles Haughey

Haughey makes him stand then for a moment & then says very slowly,

"Now Sergeant, I'd like you to tell me everything you heard today, exactly"

But, due to a wiring snafu, the intercoms were always on & my uncle could hear everything that was being said in the lift

He reported this to his commanding officer, who reported it to Building Management, who reported it to someone more senior, who reported it to someone more senior...

The amount of competent but not great 90s serial killer movies he could have elevated if only he'd had the chance

Yeah it'll have to be something like that. This version of Charlie Cale is a fastidious pastry chef with a pet lizard.....or something

Though if the rolling recasting eventually re-unites Johnson with Mark Ruffalo, I won't hate it

Yeah, Season 2 definitely had a dip

Not sure how you untangle the appeal of the show from Lyonne's performance

Beautiful song

Re the interest rates, I had an ECB tracker mortgage pre-crash, & it's not so much the absolute amount you're paying as the stress from the ratcheting increases & wondering how high they'll go

Of course I still had that mortgage post-crash & then spent several yrs laughing my ass off at the bank

I shall take a look at them

Yeah it's ripe with possibilities. Would you say D.O.A counts, since he doesn't technically blackout?

Later, the 3 of us are at tea-break along with some other people and my fellow newbie asks "Bill, what was that thing you said about the Minister being a swan?"

Bill "Swan? A Swan? Does the Minister look like a fucking swan to you? The Minister is a duck!"

Another vote for you to keep going, I've seen some stuff I never would have otherwise because you've mentioned it

Recall narrative that his time as head of CPS would equip him well for government, whereas I think opposite is true

In that, ambition aside, people who head up public bodies usually do so because they think they could do job well, but aren't normally required to ask 'what is this organisation for?'

Bar the slight cognitive dissonance of watching in 2025 & realizing that the Phil Spector surrogate is the heart & soul of the movie, it holds up wonderfully

It's a gem of a movie, & we have it to thank for Elvis Costello & Burt Bacharach's subsequent collaboration album Painted From Memory as well

And sadly the soundtrack now seems to be out of print
