The journey began in silence, and Mira’s senses focused on the sound of clopping of horse hooves and the swaying sensation of the carriage. It was over. She was going to the Citadel to who knows what fate. She thought of her Gran and her mother who had sacrificed so much for her and how she had wasted everything they had given to her. She didn’t even feel the tears streaming down her cheeks as she rested her head on the carriage. And Raelan. I’m so stupid. She couldn’t believe she had misjudged him so completely. That she had been about to volunteer her secrets because she somehow thought he would stand by her no matter what they faced. Well, when someone shows you who they are, you should believe them, she thought. Her face crumpled and she finally released the keening wail that she’d locked inside since they’d taken her. There was no point in hiding anything anymore.
