I'm going to be honest here, I think AI is going to do so much damage to the usable internet that even after it's inevitably crashes out, it's going to take years to disentangle from every space it's polluted, like digital asbestos it's gonna be time consuming effort and likely expensive venture.
I think AI is going to eventually tank in the longterm, but...

the only real way to combat this is single-interest communities. Forums, user comms, etc, with a barrier to entry. They become trustable knowledgebases. It's really the only way forward is to return to what worked best the first time

truly, i kept trying to tell people this. "they're going to keep rolling back rights even if dems win everything. that is going to make it harder to win elections in the first place too. what's the plan."

and it was "just keep winning anyway until they die, i guess" bsky.app/profile/wowc...
"hope we stumble into havim the presidency and a supermajority in both the house and Senate when the justices happen to die of old age so we can even nominate new moderate justices that our good friends across the aisle will accept" is not a serious plan

but it is their actual plan afaik

It's hard to over-state how, for a large fraction of the country including almost every conservative, their political stance on protesting amounts to desperately hungering for the pain, suffering, and public execution of any whiner or "attention-seeking loser" who does anything resembling protest.
The same people who are terrified to even mildly criticize Trump because they think one of his supporters will kill them, think it’s hilarious when Trump has federal agents manhandle Democrats who have not broken any laws.

"Not for you."

Palestinian citizens of Israel--21% of the population--are being excluded from bomb shelters on the basis of their ethnicity.

This is the society the West will defend at all costs.

I think we need to start to grapple with the concept that large swathes of the left are also very anti immigration, albeit for not quite the same reasons, and for a lot of those people, anything that divests from those undeserving foreigners in any way is considered a step in the right direction
A lot of the left got suckered into the idea that Trump is anti-war because he hates multilateralism. But he doesn't hate war. He loves it. What he hates is the idea of defending another country based on shared values, because he doesn't have any values. He wants to divide the world like Mafia turfs
The whole idea of Trump as antiwar rests on a confused reading of his hatred of multilateralism, the international order and the Deep State. He doesn't hate those things for good "dovish" reasons. He hates them for degenerate, corrupt reasons. Here's a corrective. 5/

I’ll save you some time: while interracial marriage was legalized in the US in 1967, majority approval didn’t happen until the mid to late 90s.
anyone who's gonna go "it sucks but you gotta win over people first, slowly build the case for rights" for trans people should tell me, without looking it up, when they think interracial marriage reached majority approval in america

The cruelty of this is, genuinely, staggering. This is a policy that saves virtually no money whatsoever whose success is measured in the number of children it kills.
Breaking: The Trevor Project received a stop-work order last night on its contract with the national 988 suicide prevention hotline. The Trump administration is eliminating the option for LGBTQ callers to the hotline to press 3 and connect with someone who specializes in LGBTQ mental health.

There are no distractions. It's all bad. Systematically stripping trans people of their rights, guys in balaclavas shoving any brown person with a tattoo into a ummarked vans, ending healthcare for millions. It's all in service of fascism and technofeudalism. It's all one thing. That's the point.

How are thinking adults in Dec 2024 still acting like Israel is “selecting Hamas targets” and not simply blowing up anything that makes life sustainable pursuant ethnic cleansing. There is no “hunt for Hamas,” it’s pretextual. We know this. HRW, Amnesty, the ICJ all have long reports detailing this

Machine learning is a technology. Gen AI is political. And that politics is brutal neoliberal permanent growth at any cost. We are forever promised that AI will take away tedious toil, but only ever see it replace creativity and thoughtfulness. It doesn't make any of us the best version of ourselves
This is a great way to frame what I've been observing - the only successful use cases for AI (internet chum, copy pasting from stack overflow, scams, art theft/plagiarism) are just existing bad behavior scaled up. There's nothing actually new except a lower barrier to entry for the malpractice.

And if you need an example of what that sort of violent apartheid looks like in practice today: in Israel ethnosupremacy is a critical factor in deciding whether you're human, or just subhumans routinely shot to bleed out on the street as anyone who tries to save you is exterminated for sport.
In WW2, over 70% of Dutch Jews were murdered because the state kept data on people's religion. France objected to such an invasion of privacy - so 75% of the French Jews lived.

If you wanna know what the Dutch government has learned from this, guess who just voted to track the religion of migrants.
